I have been working most of the day on a piece on the shape of things to come during the Storm. I am certain I will have it up before I go to bed tonight.
In the meantime I thought you should contemplate this bit on the unraveling of Cardinal Walter Kasper. The good Cardinal means well, but he got a little too big for his britches. Now that the African Bishops do not share his progressive attitude towards marriage and sexuality, he dismissed them as irrelevant to the larger Church. Sadly, this is often the way with progressives. They speak with such passion and compassion for the less fortunate – and if the ‘less fortunate’ dare to speak up for themselves in contradiction to their mentor, the mentor casually dismisses them. It seems that the only response progressives have for those they claim to speak for if those charges disagree with them are to note that “Kids say the darndest things” or explain that they need to shut up. The Cardinal has gotten too involved with himself and the excitement of claiming that he speaks for the Pope. It is a conceit that leads many into a ditch.
I started suspecting last week that Kasper was headed for a fall. I have seen it a hundred times in politics. The bright lights of massive press coverage are a heady brew – particularly if you have been marginalized for decades. There will be more provocative nonsense that comes from this Synod, but Christ is in charge and it will not be ultimately hijacked.
Now the next thing to understand is not to underestimate the actual contribution Kasper may make to this Synod and the more formal one next year. Often, people produce their best work after they have been humiliated. God is not done with Cardinal Kasper yet – and you should not dismiss him.
So, a little something while I finish off this piece I have been working on.
