Latest Update on Joe Cronin

By Charlie Johnston

I have talked with Joe’s Dad twice today. They have been in contact with the Schiavo Hope and Life Network. He has a few contacts now at Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, which has been wonderful in these things. He also will be in contact with Fr. Frank Pavone’s Priests for Life, which has successfully expedited a similar situation before. He has gotten all this information through your help.

God bless you readers here. As you know from your own lives, when you are in a deep crisis, it is difficult to organize your thoughts and plans coherently because you are juggling so many things in the midst of profound fear. Because you took the initiative and did what you could to find concrete help, the next right step, you might say, he has those resources and is just able to make the calls and make his case. God bless you. I do not know what will happen with Joe Cronin, but I am feeling that this young boy is going to get a chance at life, and primarily because of your efforts.

Please say a prayer in thanksgiving for Bishop Rene Gracida, as well. He has been Johnny on the spot. I consider it a matter of Divine Providence that this is unfolding right in his Diocese. He has been a true servant and shepherd as this crisis unfolds. I thank God for him and his devotion to his duty and his love for his fellow man at this stage of life – 91 years old. Amazing grace in action.

Don’t let up. I will let you know throughout the day and night until this is resolved. Keep sending it out on your email prayer chains, share it on your Facebook Page – and if you know of a potential resource, call them to pave the way, send me who to talk to and the phone number, and I will get that information to the family.

Briefly on another note, my sister, Kim, is having some severe struggles right now. She is one of my greatest sources of solace when I am hurting and I love her so dearly. Please offer some prayers up for her.

Charlie Johnston is a former newspaper editor, radio talk show host and political consultant. From Feb. 11, 2011 to Aug. 21, 2012, he walked 3,200 miles across the country, sleeping in the woods, meeting people and praying as he went. He has received prophetic visitation all his life, which he has vetted through a trio of priests over the last 20 years, and now speaks publicly about on this site. Yet he emphasizes that we find God most surely through the ordinary, doing the little things we should with faith and fidelity. Hence the name, The Next Right Step. The visitations inform his work, but are not the focus of it. He lives in the Archdiocese of Denver in the United States.

Charlie, I will be praying for you, your sister Kim and little Joe.I know that all the prayers that were offered up for our son Joe when he was a baby and came close to death were what helped him and our whole family to pull through. Thanks be to God! I will ask our Joe to also pray as an act of gratitude for all the prayers that were said for him.

This family here is amazing. I am honored and humbled to be among you. Not only do I always learn from you, but when I see the generosity and love for others, I know there is hope for us during and after the Storm. I hope to meet some of you someday to thank you. I am one of those who are struggling to bring my family back to Faith. Alone against the Satan’s influence. I don’t feel alone here with you. I have Hope again! Praying for Joe Cronin and I offered this morning’s mass for him.

Kathy: I agree with your thoughts about this amazing family here. I am so grateful to have found a home here and have felt hopeful for the first time in such a long time, even with all of the events surrounding us in this storm. I am also struggling to bring my children back to their faith, but with Charlie’s postings and all of the wonderful comments written here, I have learned so much helpful information. I am lifting up in prayer Joe, Kim, Charlie and all of the family here and their intentions.

coming a little late here but am praying and have asked prayers from Radio Maria in Alexandria, LA. and have given them the short story in hopes they spread it. I have asked two little martyr saints, Faith and Sara to intercede. Thanks be to God for Bishop Gracida, may God bless him abundantly and all intercede for Life over this culture of death.

Thanks for the update, Charlie. I’m so glad that the family is in contact with Cardinal Glennon Hospital and with Priests for Life.

People around the country/continent must be blowing up the phones at the hospital in Texas. I just tried to call Public Relations and I got a recording that said basically I couldn’t talk to anybody and couldn’t leave a voicemail and would be forwarded to the general operator. The general operator, in turn, told me that I needed to talk to Public Relations. When I told her that Public Relations had had a direct roll-over to her, she tried to find somebody with whom I could speak. After being on hold for seven minutes, I hung up and called back. I got the same operator as before, and she finally sent me to the voice mailbox of somebody named Victoria something. Anyhow, I left a message; I hope it gets to whomever needs to hear it.

Yay, Mick! Keep those calls rolling. I am told by the family that Driscoll has set Friday morning as a hard deadline for beginning procedures for an acceptable transfer or they will proceed with action to withdraw life support. Your calls and continued advocacy may well buy the boy some more time to get something solid in place. Once again, the number for the hospital is (361) 694-5000.

Of course we are praying for Joe to be healed and we would like him to be, but even if he is not he must be allowed to die in God’s time and way or be healed in God’s time and way. I will say a few more prayers on my commute home tonight.

God bless you, Bob. Tomorrow is the critical day for getting progress with Cardinal Glennon. If we get a preliminary decision that is favorable. young Joe will get a chance. If we don’t, Driscoll Hospital will begin Friday to try to aggressively justify a decision to withdraw life support. I am told that since the first test they performed did NOT support a finding of brain death, they are going to skip the two preliminary tests this time and go right to the final test, which I presume as looser, as it is more likely to support such a finding.

I have left a message about this with the chaplain at our Catholic Hospital. I gave your email address and my phone #, said to put the boy’s name in the topic of the email. I went through the directory trying to figure out who to call, and just decided to start there. I have some other ideas to get in touch with someone from that hospital that I will try also. Sharing with our prayerchain and have shared on facebook as well, and one person suggested Saint Jude Children’s Hospital. Is that an option?

The contact info on Joe and Driscoll Hospital is circulating through the folks I am networked with. This includes The Rev Nigel Mumford of “By His Wounds” healing ministry. He is very keen to help. A few years ago he contracted H1N1 virus and went into a coma for 3 weeks. He said that his heart goes out to someone who is helpless and dependent on the goodwill of those around him. If someone had decided to take Fr Nigel off life support, he wouldn’t be here now. God may yet have plans for Joe to be a blessing to others as well.

Surprised but pleased that I got through to a Ms Tammy Weaver, Vice-President of Community Relations? at Driscoll. She was very courteous and listened as I explained that I hoped that young Joe’s parents and family will be given time to find a hospital that would meet their needs and wishes concerning Joe’s care. Of course she could give me no info on any patients and assured me that the hospital takes care of each patient to the highest degree but she did listen patiently – I just wish I could have been more eloquent. Hopefully it will be quantity of calls made on behalf of young Joe and not just quality. But I got through!!!!!!!

Update on my own comment…. I’ve talked to two people from our Catholic hospital system here, and they said that their hospitals are not equipped for intensive care pediatric patients. They go to another hospital here. But they suggested reaching out to hospitals in Austin or San Antonio which have robust children’s hospitals. Will continue to pray for some answer for this family and their son.

i know I am naive in some ways; but I am still horrified that we have to even be having this discussion or scrambling in this way in the United States- that the world has come to the point of a child being killed because the parents cannot find the “right” hospital in time- right meaning one that values life? right meaning that money is not the number one issue? i feel like a child’s life has been put on level with dogs that will be killed from shelters unless they find the “right” home in time. Dear dear Lord forgive us all. My heart and prayers going up for this family and your sister Charlie.

Prayers for your sister and for Joe, asking for St. Michael intersession for both. Joe, hit close to home as I have a houseful of asthmatics. My crew has had a viral they haven’t been able to shake since the first of the year- been reminding to offer up for prayer requests here and for the poor souls (challenging occasionally for this mom and older ones but especially when you are 6 & 7) as well as our family rosary. Not perfectly, but we’re trying. God’s blessing to all.

(Oops, I posted this under the wrong post, you can delete that one–sorry.)

Charlie, just sent you an email. I just got off the phone with Driscoll Hospital, they were very gracious and polite. I spoke with the Vice President , Ms. Tammy Weaver (as Connie said above) She was very, very gracious. I identified myself as a registered nurse in the St. of CT, and told her I was calling to advocate for Joe Cronin, the young patient on life support. I asked that if her facility could not provide what the parents were asking, that they at least work with the parents to facilitate a transfer. She then cited privacy laws. The next question I asked made her very uncomfortable. I told her that, yes as an RN, I did understand patient privacy laws, but—-generally, would her facility consider taking a more pro-life, pro-patient philosophy instead of rushing to terminate life support and harvest organs?

I did thank her. I’m bad at these things, eh, I guess that cut right to the heart of it and she definitely was flustered. I hope I did not make things worse.

I also sent you an email. I contacted the catholic hosp that I received my training at.

God Bless you and everyone, I prayed the Miraculous Trust prayer, and my heart is with you all.

Just called and spoke with Ms. Weaver. I told her I wasn’t asking for any information on Joe, but adding my voice of support to his family, asking that the doctors and hospital give them more time so they can transfer Joe to another hospital. It was “strange” that I had a terrible connection with the operator, could hardly hear or understand her, but when Ms. Weaver answered the connection was perfectly clear. Will continue to pray for Joe and his family, the doctors and hospital.

And, “The child is not dead, but sleeping.” For crying out loud, if I went in there and pulled the plug, I would (rightly) be charged with attempted (or actual) murder, but since it is to be done by those vested with the authority to commit the same act, it is deemed “healthcare”. Gruesome. God save us all from the clutches of these ghouls!

    Hi Charlie,
Most hospitals have patient right advocates and if they don’t there are non-profit patient advocates as well. Some are affiliated with the hospitals, some are not. Do you know if Joe’s father has spoken to a patient advocate? Insurance should cover this if they have health insurance. They are supposed to be FOR the patient not the hospital and it may help facilitate things.

Maybe a reader in the health care field would know more about this?

Mary, thanks so much for the comment. Please folks, you have an serious idea, pass it on. No harm done if it is already covered. But when I led campaigns, I used to make a point of telling staff to NEVER refrain from passing on an idea just because you think, “Surely they have already thought of that.” In stress situations, often the smartest people forget the simplest, most obvious things. The only really bad idea is a good idea that doesn’t get mentioned because you were sure it must have been already thought of. Thank you.

Hello Charlie, thank you and the other posters for the email links – I have just emailed requesting the hospital to reconsider their decision and to allow the parents the chance to arrange a transfer to another hospital. I also mentioned that I was emailing from Australia so that they will be clear about the fact that this has become an international concern. I petitioned Our Blessed Lord at Mass this morning ( it’s already Friday here!) for the recovery of both little Joe and Kim. BTW I prayed the PMT when Joe’s dilemma was first mentioned by his grandfather’s friend and, being a grandmotherly type (even though I’m not a grandmother), I asked St Anne to intercede before her Grandson for Joe.

I’m praying. I can barely read another story like this as a mother. I am going to be frank, Loyola, Boston, Colorado, Texas, too many that never make the news but you hear about them on social media, CYS, took my sick child. The medical system is becoming the gas chambers of our day. Murder by proxy. You are not allowed to protest aborted fetal tissue in vaccines (little help from the church there). You are not allowed to disagree with the white coats about treatment. You can rarely sue. There is little to no avenue for justice. I wish people would read history. Hitler’s (and other tyrants of the last century), their biggest problem, what to do with all the bodies? People see bodies piling up, maybe they’ll wake up. So maybe next time, better to hide them, under non speak, line up here. Trust us, we’re doctors. And in the meantime too many mothers and fathers are terrified to walk in the door today and no one cares, you’re just irrational. Are we?
