Melissa and Aaron Klein, owners of the now-defunct Sweet Cakes bakery in Oregon, losing their shop and facing bankruptcy for refusing to bake a “wedding” cake for two lesbians.

By Charlie Johnston

“No one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name…” – Revelation 13:7

I have long said I believe the mark of the beast to be subservience to an ideology. Would that there were not so much evidence to support me these days. Increasingly, if you are Christian and insist on living it as if you actually believe it – rather than treat it as a quaint cultural remnant, you are the target of government, rogue judges, and people who are not content to have their deviancy tolerated, but insist that all must applaud it.

Melissa and Aaron Klein, pictured above, lost their bakery two years ago when courts ruled against their freedom of conscience when they refused to design and bake a “wedding cake” for two lesbians. Now, not content with merely destroying their business, authorities in Oregon have also ordered them to pay $135,000 to the lesbian couple for refusing to bake that cake. That will bankrupt them personally. I would say I wish I could find someone to refuse to bake me a cake,  but I am not so viciously spiteful that I would sue someone for a minor inconvenience. The original story was bad enough. Since then, GoFundMe, a supposedly non-political fund-raising site has banned the Kleins from raising money from their site. rev-franklin-graham-940These “non-political” cultural mandarins think the couple is not morally worthy of the support of decent people. Fortunately, the Rev. Franklin Graham has stepped up to help the couple avoid complete ruin. Graham, son of the great Rev. Billy Graham, “America’s Pastor,” has been doing extraordinary work to fight the growing soft persecution of Christians in this country and hard persecution of Christians in other countries.

I tell you what…if  robbers, muggers and violent gang members were prosecuted and sentenced with the same uncompromising vigor with which this Christian couple has been persecuted, you could safely walk the streets of any city in America at any time of the day or night. But we reserve our resources for real threats – Christians who won’t bow down to state authority and cultural discrimination against them. The dominoes are beginning to fall for the persecutors; their time is short, indeed. We will be in charge again well before the Storm is finished. May we treat all with genuine tolerance, charity and grace. You don’t have to agree with me to be my friend – but you do have to refrain from trying to force me at gunpoint, literal or wielded by courts – to celebrate your opinion.

Then comes the crusade of several Democratic Senators to protect Americans from the dangers of artisanal products made by small industries – including the little signature soaps and crafts made by orders of nuns and monks to keep afloat. Every product, every endeavor, must be made to dance to the tune of government overseers to exist. This actually was among the  reasons many pilgrims came to America in the first place. The British government licensed friends and cronies as “purveyors to the crown” of various products – and shut all others out. Ironic, America was formed by people who would not suffer the yoke of soft government oppressions and cronyism – and now is run by people who make King George III look like a piker. If you have never read George Orwell’s Animal Farm, do so. The brief novel has become a startling allegory of what America has become.

He felt there was a special anointing to this piece he put up on his “Divine Antidote” website. For me, it offers a refined and thoughtful reflection on subjects intensely related to what we have been talking of lately. And since this Musings piece starts with two stories of how the statists and cultural left is besieging Christians who take their faith seriously, it is pleasant to end with someone who is steadfastly propounding and spreading that faith.

Thank you so much for posting this vitally important message. We Christians are literally under attack and I believe it is important we stand together in Christ’s name to defend one another from the evil that has befallen this world.

When I read about this story and learned that this good Christian family has five children who are learning at a young age just what hatred is when it is directed at themselves it outraged me. I am still so angry my hands are shaking. But, I know in my heart that this is just the beginning of ever worsening injustices and persecution our brethren and perhaps ourselves will suffer. We must keep in mind your words Charlie…to take the next right step, be a beacon of hope, and stand for Christ faithfully.

God bless each of us and keep us safe, but when faced with financial, physical or emotional danger may we stand as bravely as those around us and overseas have been standing. Courageous Christians are exactly what God wants of us.

Charlie, sometimes I image the following scenario: one day I’ll go to the bank to withdraw money and discover that my account has been wiped out. At the same time, it’s revealed that I no longer have a social security number. Medical records, school records, employment records are all gone. In addition, all investments and credit cards. Therefore, no means of employment, of paying rent or buying food. “The Powers That Be” have decided to make me “vanish” because they determined that I have no place in their brave new world and will let me twist in the wind. They have the ability to do this to anyone one of us!

Such as medicines, nurses, doctors ambulance rides and on and on.I called Medicaid and gave them my medicaid number and I do not exist in the computers.
I am bedbound and need people to daily clean me and apt.,and shop.Everything one needs to do to exist.

I have been full of tears today, and your musings have also brought on the tears. In spite of the fact that the Lord has been pouring out graces on me these past few days, strengthening my faith, increasing my trust and filling my to overflowing with a new certainty of His love and faithfulness. . .I am at the same time heavy with sadness for all the effects of sin and evil being revealed in every aspect of life and every area of the world. The persecution of Christians, especially the most brutal and torturous; the tragedies in the form of earthquakes, tornadoes, fires and floods; the unthinkable cruelties of abortion and euthanasia. . .everything dark and dangerous. . . is almost overwhelming. I say “almost” because we know, beyond any shadow of doubt, that every single soul, every living thing, everything in the heavens, on earth and under the earth – ALL OF IT! – is in the hand of God, who is Love and Mercy itself. Everything is going to be alright. You and I are going to be alright. No matter what happens, it is Love that comes to us in all of it. So we can “praise God anyway”, and love Him and trust Him without limit or reservation. If GOD IS FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US? He is our peace. He is our only hope. And we, if we put all our hope in Him, will not be disappointed. Blessed be God. Blessed be his holy Name.

  11. I’ve found myself pondering the mark of the beast much recently. It is of course one of the most speculated things in all Scripture, so I’m probably wrong, but I can’t help but share:

Concerning the mark “on the right hand or forehead,” I looked up the actual Greek word used for “forehead,” and a literal understanding of that word would yield “in between the eyes.” Likewise the “right hand” could just as easily be understood as the wrist (we know that from the Shroud of Turin!).

“Wearable” technology is just now beginning to hit the mainstream. The two primary ways of doing this? Glasses (e.g. “Google Glass”) and Watches (e.g. the Apple Watch.). In-between the eyes, and on the wrist.

At the same time, paying for things with these devices is now becoming mainstream. Consider Apple Pay and Google Wallet.

Iphone is now in its 6th version. Samsung Galaxy is now in its 6th version. Nexus is now in its 6th version.

Now the Mark of the Beast must also entail sin, as Charlie (I think rightly) says here: it will entail a subservience to a (false) ideology. Right now there is obviously nothing sinful about having an Iphone and using it to pay for things. But perhaps there will soon come a time where having these devices will become A) Mandatory and B) Requiring the signing of a contract that contains language which clearly indicates sacrilegious worship of “the beast,” whatever/whoever that winds up being.

One final thought: the Beast will be unhappy with anything short of worldwide dominion. When we see a push to get one of these pieces of technology in the hands of each and every human on the planet (the justification for this ridiculous effort will of course be shrouded in humanitarian language), then his reign is upon us.

Daniel, there is a concerted effort to ban cash. If that is successful, people will indeed have to use cards or e-wallet software, at least in developed countries and even in a number of developing countries. Cash would only work in the black market or shadow markets that would exist between people trading directly face-to-face. European governments and others have routinely made old versions of cash worthless by issuing new versions of cash. The current attempts by governments like the US to spread FATCA-type laws around the world is part of this process of making every transaction trackable/reportable. This is primarily so that governments can assure that we are all paying every penny of tax we owe them. If you are not willing to engage in that network of electronic trading, you will be sidelined and largely unable to participate in the modern world.

The frog gets boiled slowly. I do not find your thesis unlikely to occur. The point is simply, when do people have to start saying no. As you say, we are not there yet.

Thank you SteveBC, Daniel O’Connor and everyone else who is bringing up the mark of the beast. Being aware of it is not giving into fear. The reason it hasn’t happened yet is because the need for it has not materialized. Although things are crazy now, we in the U.S. anyway have not entered into the fullness of the Storm. We don’t know yet if people will have it or not because that option has not been presented to us yet. Choosing to assume that it will never come about is naive in the same way it would be to say that because the FEMA camps have been around for a while but they have not been occupied yet, they probably never will. Obsessing about it is dangerous but I do not see anyone here doing that anyway. And I definitely do not think that the mark of the beast is an ancillary thing as Charlie says in response to a post further down the line. If no one is sure (and no one is) about how things are going to unfold, how can we just assume that the mark of the beast is not part of what we will be dealing with? No one can see too much beyond the possible financial crash in September and the weeks/months after which it seems like we are assuming that some semblance of calm will be restored, at least for a short time. But does anyone know that for sure?

I’m not so sure about that. There is still a long way to go until 2017. Even if the first wave of oppressors are brought down relatively soon, there is a lot more coming our way, based on what I have read here and elsewhere.

Charlie, you have mentioned a few times about not getting tripped up about things you cannot control. If it was forced on a person involuntarily, well, that is not in their control. That is not what we are talking about here and never was. However, if getting the mark of the beast is a choice that a person must make such as getting this microchip implanted in yourself or else . . . well, that is a choice we would have to make. We are in control of that choice. So, we need to know what the ramifications of that choice might be. Are we ready to refuse the microchip even if it means we cannot get food? It is something to be aware of, not fret over. And that might be the time when the ideology of the mark of the beast and the technology of the mark of the beast become one.

Now is the time to be made aware of it when we are still calm and have the internet and ourselves to investigate such things although it seems like the recent posts about this is all anyone really needs to know. Otherwise we will only have the information about such things that the government wants us to have. To refer to people going into a tizzy about it trivializes something that the Bible is very, very clear about. In the relative peace we have, between what the Bible says about the mark of the beast and what the technology seems to indicate, we can be prepared better to give the answer that the Bible tells us – NO to the mark of the beast. Satan will not be delighted about people being forewarned, especially when the warning comes from the Bible. And he knows the Bible better than any. He will try to do what he always tries to do, either to stir us up into a fearful frenzy which by definition will cause us to to take our eyes off of Jesus or he will try to minimize whatever danger may be lurking around the corner.

To know what the technology is and what the Bible says is hardly giving counsel to our fears any more than buying a sleeping bag that will keep you warm in -0 degree temperatures is giving giving counsel to our fears about getting frostbite. However, knowing about this possibility is arming us with what we need to be a light and sign of hope onto others in case this happens to come about. To be unaware of it is both dangerous and naive. Otherwise, what will we be saying to our neighbors, friends, family, and even strangers about the mark of the beast, “Oh, I don’t know, maybe it won’t be so bad. I’m not really sure one way or the other, don’t worry about it, it should be OK. Don’t get in a tizzy about it.”

What kind of hope or guidance is that?

I don’t usually pay much attention to this issue other than to keep it in the back of my mind. I do think that Charlie is right that the Mark is an ideology, one I have already said no to.

However, let’s consider the idea that it is an actual mark or piece of equipment or that it is of an ideology not currently extant in the world. I have two comments.

First, I think it entirely possible that it would be difficult to tell when you are actually faced with something that is actually the Mark, if it comes before the Collapse. I would assume that the Powers That Be would not trumpet the idea that what you are about to allow is actually the Mark. They will elide the issue and try to get you to take it somehow without truly being sure. Is the Mark the UPC codes we see now on our iPhones? Is it a change to the Terms of Service that nobody ever reads? Is it a stamp on the hand like a stamp for a bar entry? Is it something injected under the skin so that you can get a medical treatment you need? Or is it outright called “The Mark”?

The possibilities are of many gradations and subtleties. In this light I think people just have to decide as they go and do so as best they can. What might feel like the Mark to some Christians who reject it might not feel like the Mark to others who adopt it. From this point of view it’s a judgment call and too subtle to spend much time on.

Second, something that did strike me from Observer’s comment is the possible timing or period when it is most likely to arise. Now *that* might be something worth knowing. For example, I have always thought that the Mark would be part of the lead-up to the Collapse, which is the time when the current Powers That Be would be trying to deepen and consolidate their power using the current System of the World. If so, then the Collapse would end the threat because that will mark the end of the current System of the World.

However, it occurred to me just now that part of the battle with China in 2017 could involve a Mark that China (the stand-in for the satan before the Rescue) would push on those it wants to control. The more its attempt to take over the world advances through 2017, the more people who would bow to them and take their Mark. Now *that* idea makes an eerie kind of sense to me.

Unlike a current-day mark denoting adherence to communism/progressivism/deathculture, it would be specific to the Chinese System of the World being pushed by the satan’s representative, China, after the old System of the World has completely died. Rather than a military conquest, China could simply offer aid to other countries if they pledge fealty to China and agree to trade within China’s trading system. China has always viewed the rest of the world as lower than them and has long sought to make other nations and groups tributaries to their Emperor or State. Military action *might* be a part of this effort of theirs, but *influence* is the key.

That pledge could be extremely attractive to those who simply want to have their lives get better, while the rest of us would fight to keep from becoming tributaries to China. If this is correct, then that Mark would be *very* obvious. It would flow from the satan’s direct minions on Earth (China). Given that we will be losing this “battle” with China right up to the Rescue, it appears that such a Mark would be very attractive to many people all over the world.

Did I hear on TV within the last two weeks that they would insert something under the skin to be able to scan and pay for items, also? Anyone hear this? I have heard about the capsule under the skin for medical information so if you are unconscious and brought into the hospital, they can scan your information right on your body. They say it’s the size of a piece of rice. I also heard that putting things under the skin like that can cause cancer. Anyway I sure don’t want any of this stuff inserted into my body. The Anti-Christ system is being prepared for us. A way of life, i.e. homosexual marriage, living together without marriage, etc. is already here. Well, certainly, some institutions have been fantasizing about such things for decades. It never happens, but it sure gets people in a tizzy. The main reason it doesn’t happen is because people won’t have it. Could it happen? I suppose sometime in the distant future if things continued this way, but things are not going to continue this way into the distant future.

I want to emphasize that people will NOT get tripped up by things they cannot control. You will get tripped up by the little things you can control – things you should do but do not and things you should not do but do anyway. Fears over these sorts of ancillary things are a delight for satan, for while you are pre-occupied with such fears, you are much more likely to neglect the next right step you should take – or to fail to be a sign of hope to others because you are so pre-occupied with fear. Stay steady and do not give counsel to your fears.

I think it’s important to note that many people these days because of little to no Christian catechisis, have no knowledge let alone understanding of the prophecy regarding the Mark of the Beast. Most of them have probably never heard of it, and would scoff at it if they did. These are the ones who quickly adopt the latest technology even though it includes a loss of a freedom or privacy, or who quickly conform to any kind of social change without thought, such we see in the growing acceptance of gay “marriage”. I assume it is these who will quickly accept the mark as normal and good. It seems to me the chasm between the majority who wouldn’t give a second thought to accepting whatever form the mark takes, and the rest of us who would refuse because we know what it is, is widening dramatically.

While we are already witnessing the easy takeover….that is, the testing of people’s reactions already to taking away their obvious rights through manipulating the built in formerly respected and “legitimate” systems through persons who have already agreed to corruption, esp. the courts up to the Supremes….that initial takeover is now getting more blatant and bolder against the innocent. The wall that in the past has stood against this has itself been terrorized into cooperation with evil.

Right now, through the many devices of convenience, information is no longer personal by acquiescence to the new “norm” (Mark Mallett’s latest thinking about the temptation to want to be “just normal”) without even persons of good will recognizing just where this “openness” can and is leading to….all kinds of personal and family info going out to perfect strangers. People are already acclimated so to speak. Then, as chaos begins to prevail everywhere, it will become just too expensive or inconvenient or even impossible to replace any external devices of identification and other personal info. And such excuses of “lost” or “broken” will put you in the category of the “unserved”. Then those conveniences or even basic supplies so necessary for life or comfort will become out of bounds for those who won’t comply with the “universal necessity of providing for all”. Could they entice with the rationale of only being something temporary until it’s a done deal?

A “number” then incorporated into the human material itself becomes a number of loyalty to the supreme controller of earthly/material goods. It also completes the evil one’s goal of totally degrading human dignity and placing that life under him instead of the rightful Father. That number or just symbol, “666”, besides denoting the arrogance of attempting to top the symbol for the Trinity, 333, by doubling it, seems to be symbolic of just that desire of turning man into a number or “Lifeless”. This is what the Nazis, a more limited attempt of this dehumanization in that it did not become as yet universal, did to those who were first individually seen/accepted as some sort of scum of the earth and then followed by acting on this “vision” with treatment like that of cattle, delivered in cattle cars, “branded” with numbers at the wrist. First acquiesced by the “head” (or will, or human decision) and then moving on to the hand which can imply the evil action then taken or carried out.

if ‘they’ try to stamp, seal or whatever us, we know we can take to the high road and make ‘their’ life more of a challenge in suppressing us. As long as we take the next right step. Honour God and be a sign of hope to the people we meet. Who says there will not be joy in any challenge in the worse case scenario. Holy adventures are never a disappointment. Praise God.

Charlie, I believe you’ve spoken on this before, but can you reiterate what you believe God expects from us in the face of the evil facing our nation today? I’ve been watching some Youtube videos on street preaching during which the Christians verbally accosted groups of gays and/or Muslims on campus and tearing up the Koran, calling them names etc. Their approach was loud condemnation and violent acts agains the Koran (tearing out the pages etc). They were blaming the Muslims for the violence going on overseas against Christians. The whole scene was sickening to me and so I challenged their approach in the comment section, after which I got slammed by Christians calling me names.

I don’t believe in treating gays/Muslims or anyone in this manner. I think street preaching should be reading of Scripture and the presentation of personal witnessing about how God has acted in one’s life and how their life has changed.

I thought you had said God expects us to defend the defenseless or something along those lines. But this sort of attacking and hateful language directed at groups of people who aren’t Christian seems counterproductive to me.

Defending the defenseless is not at all the same as accosting others and aggressively attacking others who are doing no harm. There is nothing Christian about that, though many blame Christ for venting their own spleen. I do have something in the works on this.

I’m really worried about where this is going to be honest. I like a lot of what Shoebat dot com writes but he advocates a very militaristic approach that I can barely recognize from Islamic thinking. (He used to be a Muslim Brotherhood, I think). He justifies it from biblical verses about taking up the sword and so forth but to me, it all boils down to a scriptural excuse to kill your enemy. I think we should love the enemy and desire their salvation, only resisting with force when they leave no way out. As for ISIS, I support a strong military response to them in the ME until they surrender or are finished, but that is because they have pushed the envelope beyond what the human race can tolerate. There is no fixing those guys.

I think to clarify, I sense a movement in some currents of Christian thought that we should be as aggressive as the Islamists or at least militaristic. I read people calling Muslims terrible names and spewing hate about them while proclaiming themselves to be Christian. I think these folks are going to be as much of a problem to the Christian world as those deliberately trying to destroy it. At least, these tactics are going to incite those who already hate us and give them reason to attack us. I believe strongly in self-defense and action but in the spirit of Joan of Arc, who prayed for her enemy and only attacked them when they left no other way out of the situation. She did not relish the battle and killing at all.

I have said for years, that ‘tolerance’ is a dirty word. Not because they is anything necessarily wrong with being tolerant, but because tolerance is only step one. Once cultural depravity is tolerated, then it must be accepted. Once it is accepted, then it want to be celebrated. Better not even to fall for step one.

The Bottom line is……..We have to depend upon Jesus and Mary alone, and nothing else, except the guidance of the Holy Spirit telling you where to go, when to go or stay, how to go, where to hide, which people to trust or not,. We have to lean on Jesus for everything. even our very breath. We cannot lean on other people. We have to make Jesus our all. Have faith in Him alone. Fear is from Satan and opposite of Faith. Hard to do, but, constant prayer will get you there. keep up with the Rosary daily. All material items won’t help without God. The best thing I would like to take along is a Priest. I need confession, last sacraments, and maybe I could just live only on the Eucharist? Saints have in the Past, and maybe we will have too, then, also.

When a “deliberate choice with full knowledge” is made, then it is grave or mortal sin, if the sin qualifies. I doubt any of us will fully realize the total “plan” a lot of things will entail, and agree entirely with you, Charlie. You can’t commit a mortal sin by accident.

You made another comment I think, some time ago. It had to do with keeping our “heads” and plans low. I am sincerely grateful that you planted that in the back of my brain, because I am naive and am trusting when I often shouldn’t be. Over the last three days, more and more I have grown in the awareness that I could well be in danger from the neighbours next door to me. I haven’t said anything to them about the changing “landscape” in our countries (thankfully) or any types of preparation type plans.

Tonight seemed even more to make me really study what is happening with them, and to ask God’s wisdom and guidance over the next few weeks in this regard. Again this week, each day deviated from the plans I had intended because of other people just arriving and assuming I would do this or that. I had time after Mass this morning to stay in the Church and just rest with Jesus. It paid dividends.

When I am sound asleep and am awakened it takes me some time -15 to 20 minutes – just to be able to physically function, as in walking and talking coherently and all my concentration must be on that. The neighbour lady, again with beer can in hand, literally pounded on my glass doors at the back, and woke me up from a deep sleep (The only kind I have.) She got in the door, but this time I prevented her from heading all over my house and into all the rooms. She saw things I had purchased for weeding, trimming, and gardening and pawed all through the stuff. I had old items there too, so I could be correct on what I had, and how it worked. Anything that was old, she tried to get me to give her, saying how much they needed it. I have given them a lot of items, even fairly costly ones, over the past three years or so, once I put them outside to be picked up for the thrift store.

This time, I refused to agree (I’m an intense people pleaser – still), and would probably have acquiesce even yesterday. She again tried to check out my rooms in the house, but I stopped her, forcing her back onto the tiny back porch. She took all my thrift bags, about five, and then returned twice more to see if she would get in. She had commented on all the food I had in the hallway and I had said I was clearing out cupboards and checking expiry dates so I could take stuff to the food bank soon enough for them to use it. I can thank her for taking the thrift stuff if she comes tomorrow, and say it gave me the chance to get the food cleared away and what needed to go, gone….and comment that I sure am going to be careful to not waste money that way again.

All my hair was standing on end by the time she left. Your advice was very practical and I cannot tell you how grateful that you said it, and that it stuck in my mind. I have no question that when a collapse occurs that they have the potential on invading my house since I am alone, and taking from me anything they might want. He is a hunter and has a good number of guns. He has gone from being at odds with me a couple of years ago, and nasty, to being the nicest neighbour anyone could want.. And they both know that I am almost physically helpless if even a child wanted to subdue me.

Last week, SteveBC made a comment about the both/and options as in staying and maybe fleeing later. This week I am discussing this with my alternative “safety” contact because of what he said. Boy, am I ever glad both of you are keeping me on my toes and that the Holy Spirit seems to be providing me with the wisdom I beg for each day. It’s also a warning for any of you, who might end up in the same situation.

Unless you are sure of who you are communicating with, fly low under the radar.

mmbev: This sounds ominous! Be very careful! From the sounds of this “home invasion” you should be very, very wary of them. This seems like she was casing the place, checking out your defenses. No one should walk though your house without your permission and handle your things. No wonder your gut reaction was hair raising fear.

You should consider getting a dog. A BIG dog that will bark very ferociously when someone comes to the door. If you are alone, you may need that. But even a little dog will bark warning. Do you have any strong, young male acquaintances or relatives that can come over and make a show of protection over you, start a conversation with the neighbor that boy, if anything happened to you, there’d be hell to pay.

Maybe you should have told the lady (and can still tell her), hey don’t ever just walk into my house, because I’ve been taught to shoot first and ask questions later, and if I’m woken out of a sleep, I may not recognize you. OK, it’s a fib (a lie!) but maybe you could say version of this that wouldn’t be a lie. You need to make it very clear without saying outright that you are not a pushover (regardless if you feel like one) and will protect yourself with force if you have to.
Secondly, get better locks for your doors and windows, and maybe some of those simple alarms that will alert you if someone enters.
And pray to your guardian angel to keep watch.
I’ll be praying for you mmbev. I’m worried about you.

mmbev: P.S. I just thought of something else. A long time ago I read a book called The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker. (You could probably get it at the library.) I never forgot it. De Becker is a former law officer who now runs a private security and risk assessment firm. It was a book that warned people of tactics of people who commit violent assault crimes on others. The one piece of advice in the book I never forgot is to pay attention to your gut instinct of fear of someone, and don’t talk yourself out of it. He said, when a bunny hears a twig snap in the woods, he takes off in a flash and dives into his burrow. He doesn’t say, oh, that was probably nothing – I’m just overreacting – that probably isn’t anything really that dangerous. Nope. The bunny does not worry about his reaction hurting anyone’s feelings. He hears the sound, he’s gone. He uses his fear to save himself.
Some fear we have is irrational and harms us. But not the kind of fear you felt when that woman was in your house. That is a God given fear that is instinctual. It is meant to protect you. If you are *nice* in reaction to them after this, if you feel guilty and think your avoidance and self protection from them isn’t Christian, that is the wrong reaction. But if you nip this in the bud, you probably can avert the danger.

I agree with Petra about the value of the book “The Gift of Fear.” However, I still believe you are not at immediate risk of loss of everything here and should first consider their motivations and perhaps explore with them why they are doing what they are doing. Have an alternate plan ready to go with people you trust, if that makes sense, but I don’t believe you should automatically assume malice here. Fear could be driving them, and honesty on your part, MMBev, could bear surprising fruit without generating immediate risk to you that you don’t already think you may face. Gather allies, make a plan, then IF YOU FEEL RIGHT TO DO SO, open a discussion with your neighbors and see what happens. Trust that you will be able to make a good judgment at some point.

MMBev, I believe it was someone else who thought up the staying/going both/and idea, but thank you for the hat tip anyway. 🙂 My comment was merely noting how wise that original comment was.

Like Petra, I find this pretty concerning. It would freak me out if it happened to me. However, Charlie is correct that God will likely take from you preps you don’t need. Perhaps this is a heads-up that you’re going about preparing for the Storm in a way that is less than optimal. Either you need to be prepared to go somewhere else, and could move your supplies there now, or you need to be more reliant on God and willing to lose what you have and still live Trust-Do-Love.

Or maybe it’s time to start being honest with your neighbors and enlisting their aid and agreement so that you and they form the core for your neighborhood. It is possible that they are greedy, but it is also possible that they are afraid. If they are afraid, they may be simply trying to keep you from tossing or giving away things they believe they need. You know, “the dotty woman next door could be wasting what we will need, so let’s make sure she doesn’t by getting in there early and often.” Cautious broaching of the subject might either find them wholly on board with you, or it could give you clear reason to move your supplies – and possibly yourself – to another location sooner rather than later.

Sometimes, being open with someone now may work better than being more suspicious and closed to that person now. The fact is that you don’t know the reason for their inappropriate behavior. Perhaps you are meant to help them be more stable in the face of fear. If it’s greed and a desire to take advantage of you, then you will never be safe from them, Storm or no Storm. So I think you should find out which it is.

MMBev, I’ll second what Petra said: I’m worried about you, too. Your neighbors are a danger.

First, I’ll pray hard to Kyle to keep you safe, as well as praying to some other heavenly friends. Second, here’s a thought… would you be comfortable telling your neighbor that if she ever enters your house uninvited again, that you’re going to call the police? Third, do you have any blessed salt and holy water–the old-fashioned kind from the old Roman Ritual? Our parish priest exorcized and blessed some salt and holy water for me, using the prayers from my Latin Mass missal. Maybe your parish priest would, too. (here’s a link for the exorcism prayers for salt and holy water: http://www.catholictools.com/blog/2009/12/17/exorcism-blessing-for-water-and-salt/). Anyway, you could sprinkle the blessed salt and “high octane” holy water around the perimeter of your property, asking God to keep you safe from all danger and evil influences.

Be safe, friend; and God bless you.

My thank to each of you…Petra, SteveBC, Charlie, and Mick. This was a lot more than I expected. I have been taking the last 45 minutes or so to pray and reflect on your comments, what I know, and I will keep praying God leads me in what I must do. Personally, I would like Him to turn me into an ALPHA personality, but my kids have informed me I could not even be an alpha to a worm never mind a dog. (And I would like it to be a ferociously trained guard Rottweiler. I have a priest in mind and it will be the link provided.) I’ve given some thought, thanks to you people, on how I can rig my doors to prevent entry – handy especially in the collapse.

I gave you only the smallest snippet that I could so that I didn’t color a reply if someone should do so. This neighbour is just living with this woman. It was 2005 or 06, before my husband died that I became aware of the type of person he was. I hadn’t had much conversation with him. Standing at their four foot open weave fence (we’re side by side houses) discussing his garden, I made a joke, and, probably because he was drunk, he leaned over and kissed me, a gross, slobbery wet smack on the lips. I just about died of shock. And I sure didn’t mind staying inside either. Didn’t go near that fence again. I agree with the information on trusting your gut feeling,

After my husband died, one dark evening, when I was shoveling snow off the driveway, he was walking home (likely from the pub) and came over to me, to try and talk me into giving him a “New Year’s hug”, at the end of January. He wasn’t taking no for an answer, so I hit him with the snow shovel (not really, really hard-just enough to get the point across.)

When four years ago, I got the Polish contractor, he leaned over the fence one day, ranting and raving (drunk again), just furious (I found out later it was the loud saw sound and he was trying to sleep outside), in his navy under briefs, (no, really) yelling that the only reason this fellow was helping me was because he wanted – to put it nicely, into my bed. So there wasn’t an extremely comfortable relationship between us anyway. After some thought, and having become aware that he was telling people on the street what a horrible bitch I was, I figured that we should perhaps be on better terms. (I did, and we are, but it’s a long story. Yes, Charlie, it’s funny. Alright, maybe a tiny bit manipulative, but I was utterly truthful.)

After my husband’s death, I set out his BBQ and tanks, gas mower I couldn’t start and some things like that, (They have all these items already and any of the other things they asked for.) As time went on, I have changed all the furniture in the house for cheaper things, some even second hand, so I have no reminders. I have stayed in this house because I doubt it’s sale would provide for a new house; an apartment, yes. But this location will do until I die because it’s within walking distance of EVERY single necessity. I’ve now got wood heat, and a way to cook. If Rick is well, he can walk to work to work but can’t from where he is.

I do intend to elicit the son’s advice, only they absolutely refuse to consider what I have already said re collapse etc. But first I need to pray for a while and listen to God. I cannot think of another place to stash stuff for the life of me, although THEY AND I WILL ALL BE UTTERLY TAKEN UNAWARES BY THE COLLAPSE. (Food’s gone and I’ll make sure she sees that,) and they do not have the faintest clue of what’s coming. It’s one reason I asked Charlie re rules for living. I just can’t have them here because they are both alcoholics. Also, he would sexually assault me given the chance, if I wasn’t willing when the chance arrived. She just made my hair stand on end for the first time when I made the comment here. He has always made my hair stand on end.

I am dismayed, but thankful….you are all praying for me. And better to figure out a solution now, than end up with an unsolvable catastrophe. Drudge Report. Hummmmm. Miraculous Prayer to Our Lady of Tepeyac. I need those kids minds changed, and very soon. Then a family plan can be arranged, and with Gary’s shotgun back home, I am not much worried about neighbours themselves, except snakes whisper secrets to other snakes, especially hungry ones. Have to figure that one out too. Since their house is the same as mine, they will know exactly where to look. I do need the prayers. And I will let you know the solution.

mmbev: you mentioned you’d like to be an Alpha, but your kids say you couldn’t be an Alpha to a worm, let alone a dog. 🙂
Well, here’s how to think about that. If you had a grand kid with you, and someone tried to kidnap them from you, would you just meekly stand there and let it happen? Okay, I know the answer. I think you’d be a tigress. I doubt I’d want to mess with you in that situation. I think you’d do anything and everything to HURT that person trying to snatch your child. That is how you should think when considering self defense.
You could be an alpha. A dog will take direction from you if you don’t pamper it. If you are consistent and demand it remains a dog, not letting it on the furniture or your bed, not giving it treats, not having more than one toy for it, feeding it after you eat (in dog hierarchy, the Alpha eats first. Many people make the mistake of feeding their dog before they eat their own dinner. By doing so they are in fact telling the dog he is Alpha.), acting in a way that you expect it to follow you, it will submit. I love The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milan’s techniques. He says never talk to your dog, only use body language dogs understand to train them. It really works. (I watch his show sometimes on T.V. and have learned a lot.)
You had a good instinct hitting your neighbor with the shovel. You should have hit him VERY HARD, just so that he understands you are a force to be reckoned with. It does not matter if he bad mouths you to everyone else in the neighborhood. Don’t you think people see what he is? Do you honestly think, if they’re decent themselves, they’d agree with him? It should not matter to you in any case. You only have to answer to God.
Don’t worry if your sons believe a collapse is coming or not. Let them know the latest about the neighbors, the woman’s invasion of your private space. Expect them to help you make this neighbor back off, in the kindest, but sternest, way possible, of course.
God will help you, but sometimes the help is in the inspiration not to be passive, but to take action to protect yourself. And mmbev, maybe you cannot help these people in the time of the Storm, and you must realize Noah left many people outside the ark. That may be something to discern as you evaluate the circumstances around you.
God bless. You’re in my prayers.

Jorge, I deleted your link. It began with a quote from that old anti-Semitic fraudulent forgery, “Protocols of the Elder of Zion.” While I fully agree with your larger point, I have written several times recently about not linking to sites that are reckless and undemanding in their standards of accuracy.

I am getting more stuff from sites that publish 10 lies for every accurate thing they put up. Please…just because a dodgy site puts up something you agree with does not suddenly make them credible – and it dilutes our credibility to use them at any time. Normally, if you put up a link to a site that I know is wildly inaccurate or given to making lurid, unsubstantiated charges – even if it comes up with the rare acorn that is sound, I will just delete the comment.

We are supposed to be sober Christians. Because of the seriousness of the times, we are occasionally getting caught up in the fever swamps. Please, don’t just see if a site agrees with you on a particular narrow point, but whether its history is one of sober judgment or one of wild accusations. If it is the latter, find a better one to illustrate your point. In this case, your point was good, the supportive material was terrible.
