Visit Videos

This Page lists videos taken of various presentations Charlie has made in visits around the country.

We also are pleased to let you know that the people at St. Clare Heirloom Seeds have set up two pages on their website to make available audio files and CDs and DVDs of many of Charlie’s presentations listed on this page. (We want you to know that this is a volunteer service on their part to help Charlie get his message out, and we are deeply grateful.)

If you would prefer to listen to a simple audio stream, or if you have trouble downloading or playing the large files required for the videos listed below, then we recommend you check the St. Clare Audio web page Charlie Johnston Talks to see if St. Clare has made available an audio-only file for the video you were considering. St. Clare offers these files for free play or download.

If you would like copies of some of these videos on CD or DVD, please go to St. Clare’s Charlie Johnston Media page and purchase the ones you want. Please note that the purchase and shipping fees you will pay do not go to Charlie at all.  They are set in order to help St. Clare cover their costs to print and ship your selections.

Birmingham Dinner: Thursday, July 9, 2015. This is the go-to video for a good summary. Jeff Hahn taped the evening.  A full transcript of this video can be found here: Transcript of Birmingham Visit Video.

Part 1 of the Focus TV Interview, Covington, Louisiana (on Vimeo): Thursday, September 8, 2016. For both parts, Click Here, then click each of the two links, called “Tracking the Storm” and “Tracking the Storm, Part 2.” For a DVD of Part 1, click here. We’re not sure at the moment if the DVD titled “Weathering the Storm” is or is not Part 2 of the interview, but you can get that DVD at the same location. Call FocusTV if you have questions.

Denver Presentation: Saturday, August 20, 2016. This one was special because I was surrounded by friends and the people who help me make all this happen.

Vermont Visit: Monday, July 27, 2015. This was at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in North Adams County, Massachusetts – just over the border from where I was staying in Vermont. Matthew Tucker produced this.

Focus TV Interview: This interview was done in Covington Louisiana in late September, 2015. It is only 30 minutes long and is one of my favorites.

Atlanta Visit: Friday, June 19, 2015

I agree, AJ. I listened to a few minutes and thought the volume was not enough – but a few people said they got it through okay…must have the sort of speakers that shake the road as a car goes by. This, of course, is all volunteer in each city, so some will be better than others. Whatever is even close I will put up whenever hosts provide me a copy.

Charlie, I successfully listened today by turning my computer’s volume up high and using earphones. When I have trouble hearing a recording, I find using earphones makes a significant difference. If people have earphones, they should try using them.

Of interest is that a couple people sitting near the microphone apparently did not know that their voices were getting picked up on the video sound track. You might want to alert people near the microphone in future talks to the location of the mic and that they need to be careful to keep their voices down during the presentation – and not make any snide remarks about the presenter, hee, hee!!😀

There may be one coming from Ft. Lauderdale…but the acoustics were bad. An IT guy is actually working on the sound on that one, but I don’t think it is going to work out. But I will be doing five or six big events out east shortly, so we ought to get one or two out of that anyway. (Ha! I should hire Bishop Gracida’s sound guy! The sound quality on his homily that I put up was great.)

I just finished listening to the video from your Atlanta visit and I must share, your mix of seriousness of topics, spiritual sharing, worldly advice and humor were refreshing in their sincerity, genuineness, humility and truth. I humbly admit, your blog writings challenge me by having to look up at least one or two definitions as I read, put your personal presentation was clear, concise, easy to follow and inspiring! Thank you for saying, “Yes” to your calling at such an early age in order for us, your brothers and sisters in Christ, to share in the benefits Our Lord offers us through you! I appreciate the sacrifices you have made in your personal life to follow Christ. May God continue to bless you and your work. Thank you! Ginny (the other one)

Thanks, Ginny. I am always spooked when so many people expect me to show up in a white robe with a shaved head. I figure they may be disappointed when they just get me – but most folks have your sort of reaction. I still love the reaction of the woman who owns the Full of Grace Supply House after she got to know me. She told me, enthusiastically, “Charlie, don’t take this wrong. I completely believe God sent you…but I am so glad that when God sent someone, it was a poor schlub like the rest of us!” I howled with laughter and told her I had long ago told one of my priests that my ultimate ambition was to be the patron saint of poor schlubs.

It was great meeting you, Ed, and I look forward to putting the pix up.

Ed, I drove away with a smudge of disappointment in myself. I realized, too late, that I had hoped to make your acquaintance at that event. I long presumed you’d be there, since it is fairly local to you. I have frequently felt on the same wavelength with you, reading your replies. The date snuck up on me and I was very preoccupied , and I am in a bit of a flare of my own wacky condition, which is causing “brain fog” (such a trite sounding phrase for a pervasive problem) so I just plain forgot to try to connect with you, until I was leaving! Would have enjoyed meeting you and any family or companions you brought along. In fact, I was chiding myself for not making more of an effort to mingle and meet the others there. Tsk tsk. That was the real reason I wanted to go. Some folks actually looked or sounded familiar to me. I sometimes find that happens when God wants to put us together… there is a feeling of familiarity already there. Well, time will tell…

Charlie, I did very much appreciate our little chat. Great to meet you! Thanks for coming out to this area.

Oh! I do have to tell you, Charlie, I am from the real NJ, haha! and I had NO CLUE what you were saying there. (I referred to it to my daughter as that bing bang thing.. she explained it to me) Those North Jerseyans are more like New Yorkers!😉

I already had my annual trip to Emery’s u-pick blueberry farm on the 4th of July. They make the BEST pie!
Charlie, maybe at the end you should have a ‘roll call’ and ask forum members to stand up and identify themselves by their screen name (if they want to), that way connections can be made if desired.

I told my daughter as we were leaving that we should have had to go round the room introducing ourselves or something similar. There was a gentleman questioner who reminded me very much of a priest of this diocese, but he was not that priest. I wondered if he was a relation to him. I saw the sign in sheet and saw that some were from my diocese… but that was when I went back into the building, after going out to my car to leave and I went back in to check if indeed you had been present. Some of us are not gregarious… need to be led into it.🙂

          I’m leaving it to God.

Oh gosh, no, go ahead, Mary. Several of my dearest friends in Denver are going to Medjugorje late in October. The only reason I stay in the country is because I have been instructed to do so by my visitors until the Storm is fully engaged. In my case, it is not a matter of prudence, but of obedience. One of the minor reasons for my extensive travels around the country right now is to demonstrate, by my actions, that I trust God to know where I am when crash comes and guide me to what He would have me do from wherever it is. So you go about your life. I would love to go to Fatima, Lourdes, the Joan of Arc sites and Garabandal in particular…but unless something changes, I am told not to do so until the Storm is fully engaged.

Hey Charlie, while watching the St. Elisabeth of Hungary Parish talk and you mentioned Job and how he was shown Creation, I remember us discussing it a bit online (because you’ve been somewhat guarded in this topic🙂 )…but it dawned on me last night and strangely enough I woke up with it on my mind…maybe the Good LORD showed you how much “multitasking” He does and how intricate the balance of the universe is and that HE is always in control, so that at the peak of chaos in the storm when dismay is nigh, you could remember that if the entire cosmos is in control by HIM so too is the Storm. This was just burning on my Heart to share with you brother…Trust, Do, Love….

This piece, entitled “Into the Whirlwind,” was written long before I started speaking publicly on these things. While I built it as a meditation on the Book of Job, it began when I was taken “into the whirlwind” after I made, in essence, my final vows in the fall of 1997. It is a very impoverished description of what I was shown there. It created a great feeling of kinship with that part of Job’s experience for me. While I did not understand most of what I saw, I was staggered at how tenderly and how tirelessly God reaches out to us. We are His beloved. What peace and comfort is there for us if we would only take it.

Charlie, I am super intrigued after hearing you talk about Gabriel in the Iowa video. Especially when you said that he is like a big brother to you and that he can be chatty. I would find it irresistable to ask for details about the Annunciation. What was Mary doing when you appeared to her? What was she wearing? Did the dialogue happen just as it is recorded in the Gospels? That sort of thing. I would think a conversation with an older brother that likes to talk could lead into all kinds of fascinating drections! Or isn’t it that kind of relationship with him?

Well Josh, no, that is not how it is. I understand such idle curiosity – but most of it was burned out of me long ago. We do not talk about things that are not needed for me to know. And I rarely ask anything, other than to occasionally clarify for my mind something he has already said. The thing is, every new piece of information I get comes at a high price of new obligation on my part. To try to put it in more earthly terms – if the price for every new piece of temporal information you got was that you had to wrestle three bears and a gator, you would quickly become a lot less eager to know new information. My prayer has long been that I be given everything I need to do my job, which is to give people heart to endure the Storm and get to the other side of renewal – and not a single bit more than I need.

Honestly, Yong, I don’t know how that works. Most of the videos are simply links to the sites of those who made them. I know several were made professionally by tv stations or content providers…and I routinely give permission for such outlets to tape my presentations provided they give me a link to a site where people can watch it for free if they want. But these outlets have proprietary rights to what they have produced. I know Focus TV has made videos available for sale. The videos from the Berkshires belong, I think, to the Cable Television provider there…and they may have them for sale, also.

Obviously, they had expenses involved in doing professional tapings. I don’t begrudge them meeting those expenses – and since such outlets survive on slim margins and donations, I don’t mind them making sales of their work, either. In fact, I hope my tapes are a good seller for them. So I don’t mind them making their tapes un-downloadable. The Birmingham Video is downloadable as the EWTN employee who taped it gave me full rights to is (and I should note, I gave him full shared rights). Those who have done professional tapings identify themselves on the video, so I am sure you could get a copy by contacting them. But I am comfortable with the agreements I have made with the various outlets to give them full rights to the tapes provided they give me a link I can share with readers for free.

Hi Charlie. My wife and I were at the Marian Conference in Elmhurst, IL this past weekend. Until now, we were both unfamiliar with you, and your message. It was very interesting to both of us, and I am trying to learn more about your message. Not to get into the details about the suffering and trials that are expected to come, but, in your Birmingham presentation, you commented that 21 million people may die. In your presentation this weekend, you had said 26 million. So, I was wondering if something had changed in terms of what is going to come over the next couple of years? Perhaps the severity of the Storm, due to humanity falling further from God? Thank you so much.

    Like

    • charliej373 says:

No, nothing has changed, Dennis. Someone else had said 21 million earlier that day, misquoting me, and I had corrected it. With that still on my mind, I astonishingly said the wrong number, myself, during the talk. Ah well, I once enthusiastically talked about how wonderful the people of Decatur had been to me while I was speaking to a group of people in Belleville – several hundred miles away. It’s a hazard of talking and writing all the time.

In any case, I have quit saying a number altogether. My background is heavily involved in history – and the number of 26 million immediately struck me as very small for such a comprehensive conflagration. But I realized the raw number strikes others as being very large. So now I just say physical casualties caused by the Storm will only be about a third of what was suffered in World War II. That gets the point across that the physical casualties are strikingly small, not strikingly large.

Thank you so much.

Sorry, Moomba, but no. Why would you ask? How will it help you do what you are called to do? In any war, many die from many causes. In a global civil war, it is the same – the surprise being how few the number will actually be. My questions to you are serious. When people dwell on questions that will not help them do what they are called to do, there is a real danger to it. It is a distraction that the satan eagerly exploits. I don’t ask such things, as the normal vicissitudes of war and strife are sufficient to cause much more than this. It, too, is a mercy. I do not need to know in order to do the work laid before me. I have no curiosity for what will not help me do that work. I firmly encourage people to develop that same attitude.

I ask Charlie because it is a sincere question – I do not know what a global civil war consists of, to begin with. That could mean door to door combat to massive, destructive weapons depending on where one is. Nuclear weapons are possessed by many nations, which would kill massive amounts of people…I have never experienced “war,” therefore I don’t know if what is needed is something I have the capacity of doing….I’m certainly ready, willing and able to do what I am called for by our Lord. The entire time is an abstract, if you will, at least to me. I don’t feel that the Satan is causing me problems, simply am trying to get an idea of what global civil war looks like in the 21st century. And, that may be impossible.

I understand, Moomba. We think that if we knew more, we could come up with a better plan. But the only plan is to trust God and take the next right step – what is right in front of us. As disappointing as it can be, you just have to make decisions as crises arise, trusting God to help inspire you whatever happens. I tell you that the physical casualties are going to be unusually small and that the terror is going to be comprehensive – but we will be rescued in the end and that the key to it all is to get outside ourselves and concentrate on being a sign of hope.

I will not be talking much about details of what is to happen going forward, but how to behave whatever happens. I know that leaves people in suspense, but it will steady – and maybe save – those who take that mindset to heart. I should mention that my frequent prayer for at least the last 15 years is that I be told not a whit more than I must be in order to do my work.

Charlie, what you’re planning on doing is making us practice. You can’t be a sub-sherpa if you don’t know how to climb a mountain one step at a time. You can’t be a pilot, especially a good pilot capable of saving people in a crisis, without lots of practice.

I don’t know if people here will remember a flight that ditched in the East River after take-off from LaGuardia (I think) about ten years ago. Textbook ditching, and all were easily saved.

It was textbook because the pilot was the guy who wrote the textbook. He spent *years* in simulators working out what exactly needed to be done to ditch safely. *Years*.

And then it was his plane that lost its engines to seagulls or ducks, and suddenly he was living his practice. He was pitch perfect. Why? Because he practiced and practiced and practiced. And all were saved.

We have the Summary for Newcomers and the visit videos which give us all we need to know about what’s coming. We have the framework. We know in surprising detail much of what we will see once the Collapse begins it all. We really don’t need any more details.

So when Charlie says we’re going to practice, it really definitely seriously is time to practice.

Dennis, coincidentally I proofread the transcript of the Birmingham video which the TNRS Answers team recently prepared. I made a note early this morning adding an Editor comment after that number appears, saying that Charlie had misspoken and that the actual number he has always said is 26 million. The transcript at least has been corrected with an interpolated comment. We can’t correct the video, unfortunately! 🙂

Charlie, would you prefer that the interpolated comment include the bit about the WW2 comparison?

That would be excellent. I decided to do that immediately after that evening – as I realized that people were focusing on the number rather than how small it was.

Charlie, I put something fairly elaborate into the transcript. It may work well, or it may be too much. Let me know what you think of this:

[Charlie] The Storm itself, the breakdown of all social, civil and cultural norms will be a global civil war. There actually will be a very low number of physical casualties for such a complete conflagration. I expect 21 million people to physically lose their lives.
[[[Editor: Charlie misspoke here. The 21 million figure is not correct. He now points out that the number of deaths due to the Storm will be only about one-third as many as were killed in World War 2. Given that the population of humans on our planet is now over three times greater than it was during that war, this number of deaths is surprisingly small, especially given the comprehensive nature of the Storm. Think of it this way: This Storm is not about killing off people but about bringing them back to God. It is quite possible that a big death toll is not needed for God to achieve this purpose and might in fact be counterproductive to God’s intent. For you math geeks out there, the percentage is about one-third of 1% of the Earth’s current population.]]]

Thank you for editing the transcription, Steve! My only thought, if I may, is to set the number of deaths within the context of a Storm that we humans have caused. I’m concerned someone may view God extracing a death toll to achieve the purpose of bringing the human race back to Him when *He* is the One Who will *bring good* out of the mess we have made. He is the One giving us a second chance. He is the One sending us His Mother to Rescue us. So many are confused on this point and I believe the temptation to blame God will be part of the picture.

[[[Editor: Charlie misspoke here. The 21 million figure is not correct. He has been told it will be about 26 million. That number sounds very large. However, that’s actually only about a third of the number killed in World War 2, and we now have over three times as many people on Planet Earth as were living during that war. For math geeks it’s about one-third of one percent of the global population. Even more important, though, is to realize that these deaths flow from our past choices and not because God is somehow “extracting a death toll” as compensation for our past sins. Rather, given the comprehensive nature of the global convulsion we are going through, His interventions now have the effect of reducing the number of deaths to a number much smaller than would have occurred if He had not intervened through the mechanism of the Storm. Think of it this way: God’s intent with the Storm is to bring us back to Him, and He has charged His own Mother to aid us. The Storm is not our punishment. It is our Rescue.]]]

Dzien dobry Charlie and NRS! Good morning– I have read many posts speaking of Mark Mallett. I tried to watch your talk with him but it does not start (actually it did start once for me after a minute but I was too quick on the draw and accidentally clicked off of it and it stopped it simultaneously). I refreshed many times as was noted there to troubleshoot. Is it something I should see for sure or is the Birmingham talk enough for us?

Hi Charlie & Steve, First, thank you for replying to my message so quickly, I greatly appreciate that. I fully understand what Charlie is saying here, that, the number itself is relatively small, on a global basis. And, honestly, the number itself isn’t really my focus. It was a perceived “inconsistency” I was wondering about in the message, and wanted to ask about. I can understand completely how easily it would be to mis-speak on it. I did come across another article, this one from 2003, in which it says 6 millon.. not 26 million. Here is the link http://radicalchristianity.yuku.com/topic/503/Charles-Johnston-Describes-Prophecy-Says-Coming-Great-S#.Vks3AnarS70

I am not being cynical, I am just learning about all of this and trying to discern for myself. You seem like a good, honest person, with an important message, no matter if the visions are authentic or not. Also, it’s not difficult to see that the world is in utter chaos already, so, it’s not necessarily a stretch to believe that what you see happening, could in fact happen.

Anyways, your presentation in Elmhurst on Sat really stuck with my wife and I. We have three kids, and a baby due in 3 weeks, so the visions are quite frightening to us.

Dennis, during my tour around the country over the summer, a woman asked me what I thought of someone having a child right now. I told her I thought it was one of the most refined acts of faith and love I could think of.

I did not start speaking publicly about these things until the early stages of the Storm were already around us. What is frightening is the idea that God will not intervene in what already is engulfing us. If that were the case, you would bringing a child into a world with no hope. But from the beginning, I have seen Rescue. So I proclaim it now when people need to hear of it. You can see the Storm perfectly normally by the flashes of lightning, the thunder and the winds that surround us. It puzzles me sometimes that a very few people get frightened by my telling them that we are going to be rescued from what is already upon us. The fact is, your children are going to grow up in a glorious world you can only imagine – and they will call you blessed if you spend these next few years acknowledging God, taking the next right step and being a sign of hope.

(Also, I have corrected that Spirit Daily interview about 20 times now. I have clearly already told you true about the Storm. The only fundamental question left that you can’t see with your own eyes is the Rescue. But it is equally true).

    Charlie,

Thank you for your reply and message, very kind. Right now, my wife and I certainly don’t feel like we’re bringing another life into a glorious world. We’re worried. It’s honestly difficult to focus on the rescue, when so much more destruction and suffering seems to be right around the corner. But, yes, I can certainly see the lightning and hear the thunder perfectly clear right now. I see things happening all around the world — especially the last few weeks — that are pointing to a crumbling and chaotic world. Increased terror (Paris & the Russian plane blown up by a bomb over Egypt)… Isis growing and us still not taking them seriously, relying on France and Russia (of all countries) to take on the brunt of the fighting. N. Korea continually testing nuclear missiles (the instigator in the Storm). Us test-firing a nuclear-capable missile over the Pacific a couple weeks ago. And what is going on in the south china sea (China becoming the real issue), with China building islands and us rightly testing their authority to do that by sailing navy ships right by those islands. The ongoing cyber attacks/hacks from China. The attack on our faith from government. The continued atrocities at Planned Parenthood. And a growing division among races, as seen on college campuses recently. To get to the extremes of what you are talking about, a lot more has to happen in a relatively short period of time, which I think is what is frightening to us and many others.

I read your newest post on the refugee crisis. Great question on why couldn’t we work with a country like Egypt to take them in. A new and much more moderate president was just elected there. And, not to get too political, but it has gotten to the point where my wife and I are seriously wondering if the president/administration is purposely sabotaging the country. Nothing makes sense, at all.

And, lastly, on a lighter note… we’re both Cubs fans. I had them pegged to win the World Series next year. That no longer looks to be in the cards, though. Surviving, not baseball, will be the focal point in the fall of 2016.

I hope more and more people learn of your message. To be honest, I am still trying to sort out and discern in my mind about the prophecies and visions. But, your messages to acknowledge God, to ask for God’s forgiveness through Mary’s intercession, and to seek God’s mercy are messages I can certainly find great value in. So, I guess my plan is to continue to watch the world around me, with your visions in mind, while drawing closer to God.

    Thank you & God Bless,
    Dennis

Thanks, Dennis. I said recently that if I had just been called to give color commentary of Armageddon, I would have declined. But now the Storm I first began to be shown in the 60s has come to pass in almost all its particulars. That gives me confidence that the Rescue I have been shown from the start is equally true. God calls you to participate in that Rescue – and to know that He is with you, always near at hand. God bless you.

Dennis: I know when you first hear some of the things about collapse and the Storm it is very frightening, especially if you are caring for someone who depends wholly on you. But I am actually starting to believe that knowing Charlie’s message is a kind of sign to you of God’s care. Preparing in a physical way, in a way God leads you, is only moderately to slightly important (having a plan on where you might be able to go, or stocking up on food and necessities depending on your circumstances).

What it seems most of us reading here for a while have discovered is that the best preparation is ramping up your spiritual life and getting closer to God, learning to trust Him in all circumstances, and being able to let go of your trying to control life in the midst of chaos. That takes a little time. The fear is natural because of uncertainty and the dire predictions, but the lesson many of us who’ve been reading here for a while seemed to need to learn is that God has got this, and you are called to trust Him, and cling to Him, and listen or watch for inspirations on what to do next (the Next Right Step) in any moment.

As you pray and turn to God you’ll find the fear lessens, and the confidence that you will do the right thing grows, and as Charlie has said many times (I paraphrase, and I hope I am doing so accurately) that even if you make a “mistake,” God will right your path if you are resolved to follow Him. So don’t fear. Just know you are being given some time to wrap your head around this, and that you will do okay if you take one step at a time. Trust, Do, Love. (Acknowledge God, Take the Next Right Step, Be a Sign of Hope to those around you.) Those are the key words to concentrate on. We’ll be praying for you and your wife and kids.

And about the birth of your next child. Don’t be afraid. Remember, Mary brought Jesus into the world of Roman occupation, and had to travel for a census under a decree of Caesar around the time of his birth, but rejoiced exceedingly (as did the angels in heaven) at His birth. She did not worry about God’s timing. She trusted. What did Jesus say of her – – blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it. And so too with you.
      God bless.

You must be a recent drop-by or you would know I don’t do news “updates.” Not my thing. The few specific things I have discussed can be found in this summary. In this piece you will get a synopsis of the process – and purpose – of these things. As far as the videos from the visits, as regular readers know, all you have to go to the black bar at the top of the site and click onto the link for “Visit Videos.”

Now a Monsignor you know is not quite “the Vatican.” Various officials have various opinions. I am surprised it never seems to occur to people that a lot of high officials are privately talking to me, too. That has been something that makes it easier to deal with some of the many rumors people like to cite – because I am hearing a lot from some of the same sources they “cite” as their special inside knowledge.

Just a week or so ago, the rumor-mongers were confidently assuring people that Archdiocesan authorities were dogging me out. Now it is Vatican authorities. I guess, like the theme song for the old TV show, “The Jeffersons,” said, I’m moving on up!

    • Ahh, but sometimes we miss the signs and miracles that happen daily, right before our eyes. Even if there is an election, and Obama finishes his term, and the markets don’t crash, and life continues as usual… I won’t. My faith has deepened from this site and from all the wonderful people here. My pray life has changed. I now desire to surrender to His will. I struggle daily with it. But desire it. That is a miracle in and of itself.

Hello Canadian Catechist. To get a true picture about the focus of the work being done here, please be sure to read and ponder Charlie’s writing in all those links in the top line found in the black nav bar to which he directed you for Visit Videos. THAT’S the REAL NEWS. Maypacemcumte expressed so well what the majority who find their way here experience. Thanks be to God!

As for the PS, with all respect, it is a silly, impertinent assessment. The way the Church works allows clergy and laity alike the freedom to discern if praying, pondering, preparing and acting as we are here is worth the time and effort. Further, the norms for assessing private revelation are clearly defined by Mother Church and, with full hearts, completely obeyed by all here, first and foremost by Charlie.

Blessed be God on High Who reigns here and to Whom we pay most attention as faithful sons and daughters of His Church! Praises to His Mother who is ever-interceding as we invoke her prayers and presence among us. God bless you always, CC!

    Hi Charlie
I am impressed with your wisdom and have listened to all your videos. There is just one thing that I am not sure about.Maybe you could clarify. It is something I messaged you about previously. You very kindly replied to me.The issue concerns the popes authority. You rightly say that the popes authority is restricted to faith and morals. In addition you say that the popes authority does not extend to the area of economics.I am just wondering whether or not we can be absolutist in this regard. What if a matter is both economic and moral? Surely some aspects of economic activity do impinge on morality. For instance if the pope criticised the corruption endemic in crony capitalism he would be commenting on an economic activity that has a moral component. In this instance he would be speaking simultaneously in the moral and economic sphere. So I am not sure that we can be so certain that the pope never has any authority in economic sphere.God bless you.Dave McCracken

    • charliej373 says:

Of course there is some overlap, David…and to say that a Pope is not authoritative on matters of, say, economic policy, is not to say he has nothing to say about it.

There are tons of materials on canon law, theology, and philosophy that get into detail on this…but to give you a short rule of thumb, the Pope and the Church have primary authority when it comes to ENDS. Thus a Pope may authoritatively say that a primary purpose of an economic system is to give opportunity to all and to protect a man’s right to the fruit of his own labor. It is the primary responsibility of the laity to develop MEANS to accomplish those ends. A Pope may even interfere with that if there is something objectively illicit in the means chosen. But barring that, a Pope’s comments on how a policy end should specifically be enacted is advisory…he is acting in a lay role when he does this. He may be brilliantly informed, he may be terribly informed, but either way his comments are not authoritative.

You will notice that I use the formal terms that the Pope and hierarchy have primary prudential responsibility on matters of faith and morals – and the laity have primary prudential authority on temporal matters. Primary doe not mean “only,” but where decisive authority lies. This is a subject that has a lot of nuance and overlap – and so it does not lend itself to an easy dualism.

Charlie, after watching the second video and you mentioning our debt and financial collapse – every time I try to tell people about our debt and what means (this is even before I knew about you and TNRS) they roll their eyes and to them it’s like they think their are no consequences to it……also economic upheaval can happen anytime especially with the shape of EU banking…..”The panic growing around Germany’s second largest financial institution, Commerzbank, as it moves to lay off nearly 10,000 employees and suspend its dividend is another crisis indicator separate from Deutsche Bank. The clear solvency issues in Italy’s major banks, including Monte dei Paschi, are yet another explosive element.” In quotes is what I just read this morning – I work for some Investment management and banking folks at my accounting firm so I like to be aware of things to make them aware of what is in the news. I know when things crash I can’t do much about that but I like to be aware of what’s actually happening in the world – so many people put their heads in the sand and I guess that’s how they can handle things but if you can’t see that we are in the Storm right now I can’t help my friends, family. So I pray for them because my words fall on deaf ears and my siblings go back to calling me “Doomsday Dombrowski” (in good fun – I’m the youngest and tortured – ha – actually my older sister would always get the brunt of it if we were fighting because mom said you are older you should know better) I think I’m just a realist but have total hope and faith of the Rescue – no pain no gain.
